Kanna 101

Kanna, explained.

The legal little succulent doing all the work, and the two-part trick that makes it feel like that.

If you have ever read the back of a Misdemeanor bottle and gotten quietly stuck on the word kanna, this one is for you.

It's the ingredient everyone asks about, usually right after they feel it. So here is the whole thing, start to finish. What it is, where it came from, the genuinely clever trick it pulls in your brain, whether it's legal (it is), and what it actually feels like. No mysticism, no hand-waving. Just the plant, explained like a friend who happens to know the pharmacology.

The plant

So what is it, actually?

Kanna is a scrubby little succulent that grows in the dry parts of South Africa. Unremarkable to look at. The kind of plant you would walk straight past on a hike. And people have been using it to feel good for a very, very long time.

The San and Khoikhoi were chewing and fermenting kanna to lift their mood and take the edge off a brutal day long before anyone had a word like "nootropic." They cracked the good part centuries ago, by feel. We just showed up much later with lab equipment and a working knowledge of metabolism, and confirmed what they already knew. The name they used, kougoed, roughly means "something to chew." Respect to the originals.

That long human track record is part of why we trust it. This is not a compound somebody cooked up last year and rushed to market. It's a plant with a few hundred years of people quietly enjoying it.

The mechanism

How kanna actually works

The magic lives in kanna's alkaloids. The one we care about most is mesembrine, and it pulls off two things that, together, are kind of perfect.

1. It nudges your serotonin

Quick refresher: serotonin is one of the main chemicals your brain uses to set your mood. Normally your neurons fire it off and then immediately vacuum most of it back up to reuse. Mesembrine slows down the vacuum. More serotonin hangs around a beat longer, the signal lingers, and your mood drifts quietly upward. You get easier to talk to. Other people get easier to like. The whole room picks up a soft glow.

2. It keeps your head clear

This is the part that keeps kanna from being a nap. Mesembrine also goes after an enzyme called PDE4. You don't need the biochemistry. What matters is that this is the whole difference between calm and checked out. Kanna lifts you without flattening you. You stay sharp. You stay in the conversation. You're just having a substantially better time being in it.

A gentle mood lift and a clear head, at the same time. That combination is the whole reason kanna feels different from almost everything else in the calm-and-happy aisle.
The feeling

What it actually feels like

Manage your expectations in the right direction. Kanna is a lift, not a hammer. It will not knock you sideways and it is not trying to. Most people describe it as feeling more like themselves, with the good dial turned up a notch.

Loose but not sloppy. Warm but not woozy. The shoulders drop, the small talk gets easier, the night gets a little more golden. And because your head stays clear, you remember all of it, and you wake up the next morning with nothing to apologize for. Once you've felt it, you understand why we built an entire company around it.

The honest part

Is it legal? Is it safe?

Legal: yes. In the United States, kanna is sold openly as a botanical ingredient. Given our product is named Misdemeanor, the fact that it's completely above board is the joke we're proudest of.

Safe: kanna has a long history of traditional use and a clean, gentle reputation when it's treated with respect. One shot is plenty for most people, and because kanna is gentle and forgiving, the smart move is to start there and let your own body tell you what feels right. And if you take an SSRI or another prescription that affects serotonin, or you're pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor before trying kanna in any form. That's not legal boilerplate, it's just the genuinely smart move.

The short version: a legal plant with centuries of use, gentle enough to sip to your own taste, that just deserves a quick check-in with your doctor if you're on serotonin medication.
Misdemeanor bottle
So that's kanna. Now you know what's doing the work.

We built Misdemeanor around it, and obsessed over the blend so one shot is plenty for most people and the rest is yours to sip to taste. The funnest, legalest, no-booze-required stuff on the planet.
